One of the most powerful ways for a song to resonate is to “show” the listener instead of telling them. To find rich imagery that is at the same time unique and universal, making words come alive with emotion.

In this three-day workshop, Emily Saliers will work with a small group of alums to find those compelling images and descriptions that will help your songs connect in a more visceral way. We’ll look at using a character’s point of view; incorporating images; ways to include dialog; and finding the tiny but telling details. She will break down the processes she’s used in her own songs, and study examples of other songwriters and poets who have influenced her. Plus fun exercises to get your creativity flowing.

This event is exclusively for alumni of Performing Songwriter Creative Workshops, and will have all of the surprises and musical highlights you know we love to wow you with! Emily is looking forward to spending time with you, so join us if you can!

If you have any specific questions, please email Lydia Hutchinson

Emily is an incredible teacher. She takes her own craft so seriously, yet clearly loves the process of songwriting and was excited to delve into that creative process with us. Her workshop was brimming with ideas, tools and inspiration for songwriting, arranging and singing. She listened intently and carefully to all of our songs, and gave feedback that was thoughtful and constructive. I got so much from the workshop, and have been writing and trying out new ideas and arrangements ever since. The opportunity to learn from such a prolific and amazing songwriter was truly out of this world!
—Mel Farrimond, Halifax, Nova Scotia

To be a world-renowned and Grammy Award winning performer, Emily Saliers is one of the most accessible and down-to-earth people I have met. She is an outstanding teacher and perfect in the PSCW role because she is an active and engaged listener to her students. This allows her to direct the material she is teaching to where the need is greatest. In our class of 20 singer/songwriters the spectrum of musical styles as well as amount of experience of the respective students was broad and diverse. Emily was able to relate to every single student and had valuable critique and help for every writer and every song.
—Matt Steinhauer, Hendersonville, TN

They say you should never meet your heroes? Well, I am so grateful to have met mine. Emily Saliers was open, attentive and extremely giving of her process and experience as a songwriter. I know I will be feeling the ripples in the pond for years to come as a result of this encounter.
—Tréci Ladd, Nashville, TN

Emily Sailers teaching a workshop for a young man who grew up in Georgia listening to her music was the opportunity of a lifetime. And then she put us to work, challenged us, embraced us, encouraged us, celebrated with us, and pretty much made us feel we could write or do anything we wanted. Who knew a Grammy-winning artist could be an even better teacher? I was so blessed to soak up the knowledge and inspiration she freely gave during her workshop. I left Music City thinking I could conquer the world with songwriting! The results didn’t matter nearly as much as the fun process of writing songs according to her insights. What a talent, and even better person. I’m so grateful and blessed to have had this opportunity!
—Chris Wood, Athens, GA

Warm, engaging and passionate, Emily truly listens and brings a lifetime of songwriting expertise and wisdom to each song and each person she meets. She lives the music that she writes and teaches others how to do the same.
— Lynda Dawson, Raleigh, NC

In addition to being ridiculously talented, prolific and successful, Emily is warm, open, generous and enthusiastic. Right out of the gate, she made a point of learning each person’s name and reaching out in conversation, either at dinner on the first night or the next morning. Emily makes everyone feel seen and valued. Creating an amusement park of exciting experiences, great insights, practical tools and joy in musical expression, Emily makes it all look effortless. Those fortunate enough to work with her are able to far exceed any expectations they may have held about what they would receive from her workshop, while having a wonderful time.
—Ellen Gennaro, Nashville, TN

Being in the presence of Emily Saliers was life-changing for me. Not only is she an incredibly talented songwriter and musician, she’s a natural teacher who is authentic, insightful, and thoughtful!
—Stephanie Sammons, Dallas, TX
