I just heard an old bootleg from around the time I was discovered. I was homeless, singing in a coffee shop, doing five-hour sets of original material. I was so prolific at the time. It’s interesting looking back and asking, “How far has my songwriting come? Where is it going?” I didn’t know any rules when I was a kid. I would have these amazing nine-minute epic short stories set to music, things that were irreverent and unusual. You learn the craft, and some of that gets tamed. I feel like I’m better at the craft now, but you lose some of that naiveté, which can be a useful thing. You have to keep bringing that in.
