“The most important thing is to keep your tastes as open and diverse as possible. I just think that’s paramount to making new music, because new music is almost always about fusion. It’s about a gumbo that we haven’t tasted before because he added three parts of this and one part of that. Wow, who would have thought of that? It continues to shake off any rules or parameters. I love when young guys come along and write a song that defies every rule. ‘Hey Ya’ by OutKast. It’s so against the grain of everything. Or ‘When Doves Cry’ by Prince. It was just revolutionary, but instantly appealing and engaging because of its unique courage. To maintain that unique courage and keep your tastes as open as possible is the main thing.”
