“Tell the truth and love songwriting for the right reasons. If you love it more than anything else, then you should do it. If you never get rich or famous, it doesn’t matter. If you’re in it for the love, that’s what matters. All of us, the guys who I was close to as writers, like Chris Gantry and Mickey Newbury, we all lived and breathed songs. Every day. That’s all that mattered. That’s why I lost my family, you know? (Laughs) I’d be out there for three days at a time, sitting with songwriters for 24 hours, just playing songs back and forth. If you love it, it doesn’t make any difference.”
