With Guest VERLON THOMPSON

After 3 years of being separated from our friends in Scotland, Verlon Thompson and I decided this would be the perfect year to do something a little different … so we’re gathering a group of alums who’ve already experienced the Scotland Retreat and mixing it up a little!

After experiencing the magic of Verlon playing in Migvie Kirk with Paul Anderson’s gorgeous fiddle playing, we thought it would be fun to see what might happen if he did a live recording of some of Verlon’s songs for an album there. And to have our group be witness to it, experiencing it together.

So that’s what we’re going to do! Instead of the songwriting classes we had in the past, we would just start the first morning and afternoon at the castle preparing to record and planning the sessions with Paul and other musicians that might be involved. We’ll learn about pre-production, the technical set up, and choosing the right songs.

Then we’ll spend the next couple of days at Migvie Kirk recording! Verlon said he wants it to be “a document of our experience together as a group; a beautiful opportunity of being together with world-class talent in an awe-inspiring setting.”

Of course Fiona Kennedy and Shona Anderson will be with us, and Verlon’s wife Demetria Kalodimos—who’s an award-winning journalist and filmmaker—will be videoing it, so that’s another thing we’ll get to help with and be a part of.

AND, we’ll be one of the first groups to welcome Andie and Nicki Bradford’s son Ed, his wife Rose and their children as the hosts of Kincardine Castle! They moved there in 2021 and have been making the place their home. Andie and Nicki have just moved down the road, though, and have promised that they will be a part of our gathering as always—I can’t imagine our evening drinks and dinners and music circles without them!

This trip will be less minute-to-minute planned than before, with more time to hang at the castle, play music together with Verlon and each other, and then have the flex time needed to make sure we’re able to do the recording we need. But we will still have our night in Tarland at Aberdeen Arms pub with Paul and his friends, the concert at St. Margaret’s in Braemar, and this year we’ll take a special full-day trip to Inverness and a Loch Ness cruise! So it adds up to more fun and adventure with our group of kindreds and Scottish family of friends.

A few of the things included:

  • Transportation to and from the castle on May 17 & 24
  • All meals for the week, including all at the castle and dinners out in Tarland & Braemar
  • A night at Aberdeen Arms for a jam session with Paul, Shona and their friends
  • A special fund raiser concert for St. Margaret’s in Braemar with Verlon, Fiona and Paul
  • An afternoon in Inverness and then dinner at a restaurant there
  • An afternoon cruise on Loch Ness
  • … and more

So come join us for this once-in-a-lifetime trip to see our friends in Scotland again, and see where the magic and music will take us!
