Co-writing can happen in so many different ways. In the case of “You Belong to Me,” the Doobie Brothers were doing the song for their album and using Ted Templeman as a producer, as they always did. There was a melody that Michael McDonald had written, and Teddy suggested that Michael call me and ask me to write the lyrics. I felt I was really under the gun and had to do it immediately. It took me about 15 minutes. We never met during the whole collaboration, and then finally he sent me a plant about a year after I had the cut. [From Issue 111, July/Aug 2008]
