It’s been 31 years since my dad died — it’s crazy to think I’ve now been on the earth a year longer without him than I had with him.
I wrote this song, “There You Are,” a few years ago (and recorded it with Verlon Thompson adding his lovely background guitar licks) when I realized I couldn’t remember Dad’s voice anymore — it’s so, so close, right there at the edge when I close my eyes, but time just made it so soft that I can’t quite catch it. I remember every detail about the way he made me feel, though, and what the nearness of him was like. And I also know how lucky I was, the roll of the dice that I got to have him as a dad. That will never, ever be lost on me.
Dad would have, unimaginably, turned 100 today, so I thought you might enjoy these little photo memories of him, or him seeing me through a camera lens, or Mom catching another view of it all.
And as always, I give endless thanks for every little thing, and for all of you.
