Amy Ray: I tend to write from a lot of different places, because I don’t like to write more than a few songs about one thing. I get bored easily, so I move around. But I tend to have lifelong things that I touch on. For one record, I kind of—I don’t know—have a short attention span.
Emily Saliers: I still can’t help but be a bit of an eternal optimist, but these songs reflect a more mid-life approach to the life-and-love experience, and its constant challenges. I couldn’t have written these songs when I was 22—or even 30, for that matter. [From Issue 116, Mar/Apr 2009]
